Q: Re: DIY racks. How are these panels designed to be joined? It looks like they overlap with the top and bottom panels' ends exposed, but not sure. That means anything but more advanced joinery--biscuit, dowel, etc. leaves exposed screws top and bottom. It seems like even then it's not a project for someone with "a few tools". For drilling into the edges of the side panels I would at least want a drill guide. If they come pre-drilled, different story, but it doesn't look like they do. Otherwise, it looks tempting.
A: The top and bottom panels overlap the side panels. We do not pre-drill or include any hardware to assemble the panels. Every other rack model we offer includes assembly hardware, or is fully assembled. This is our budget friendly model for those that want to figure it out on their own.
Q: Are these available in a depth greater than 14 inches?
A: Yes. You can message us through the contact page and request a custom quote.
Q: What is the final assembled height of the 2 and 3 u racks?
A: The outside assembled height of the 2U is 5 inches. The 3U outside height is 6.75 inches.
Q: Is this wood unfinished? I just want to make sure I can stain it to my liking before I place an order
A: Yes, these kits are unfinished Baltic Birch plywood.
Q: Can you make it 12 inches deep with no extra charge?
A: Yes. In the comments box on the checkout page, enter "Cut to 12 inches deep". We will see that and enter it as a custom line item at no charge.
Q: is it possible to add rear rack rails to this kit? and if so how and what is the cost? thank you!
A: You can just purchase the extra rails at the following link and we will add them to your order with the mounting screws.
Q: Hello, is there any chance on 22U rack? If yes please what the price will be?
A: We can make a 22U version for you. Not a problem. We would probably not make this a stock option. So, please request a quote through our contact page. Be sure and include your shipping address so we can get you a complete estimate.
Q: If I have a basic drill/impact driver and a myriad of bits, what else might I need to complete this build on my own? I am new to DIY woodworking, but I have built other things such as DIY floating shelves and I have a lot of familiarity with installing rack gear in pre-fab racks... just don’t want to spend on this if I then have to turn around and buy $$$ of tools and supplies. Do you include an instruction sheet for us newbies? Any other major tools needed to build this out? Thank you.
A: We include very basic instructions on the final dimensions required to make your rack gear fit properly. We recommend drilling pilot holes in the top and bottom panels with an 1/8" drill bit. You can glue, or glue and screw, with 1-5/8" screws of any kind (drywall screws, deck screws, etc.). Using a square of some kind when screwing panels together is also necessary to keep things 90 degrees to each other. If you have a drill, you should have everything you need to assemble this kit. A tape measure and square would be helpful as well.
Q: As luck would have it, I came to this page looking for a few 14u racks. Is there a reason you don't offer them? Is there a chance you could make some?
A: We have added 14U as a size option. Thank you for the suggestion.
Q: Stoked to find this- great price for all the raw materials. Saw you replied to the 2U/3U outside measurements question above- so what is the outside height of the 4U, 5U & 6U? Asking before I buy so I can ensure the right height off my desk when resting monitors on top of these. Looking for the perfect height so I’m always sitting in the sweet spot while referencing horizontally placed monitors. Much appreciated.
A: Dimensions can be found in the tab labeled "Specifications" towards the bottom of the product page.
